Online Poker Strategy Guide

If you are just starting your online poker journey, then welcome to the world of online poker gaming, where the physical locations of the players do not matter and where you get to have free sign up bonuses. If you are looking for ways to increase your chances of enjoying the game and avoid having to watch your stack of chips diminish too quickly for comfort, then read on.

Actual poker playing and online poker gaming are basically the same. The rules that are followed are essentially alike. However, the strategy in winning an online poker game is slightly different than that of actual poker plays. Below are some quick pointers in playing online poker to jumpstart your beginner’s luck.

1. You have to be extra observant in an online poker environment. Poker is really a game of minds so make sure that your mind is 100% into the game. Stop chatting with a friend though IM’s as you may miss a move crucial in calculating your odds. Since you cannot physically see your opponents in an online setting, you need to observe their “virtual” reactions, like the amount of time the players take to place their bets, the amount of raises, and so on.

2. If you are at the early positions, it is a good idea to play conservatively as you do not have the luxury to know how the other players will react after you place your bet. But if you do have a fantastic hand, do not hesitate.

3. It is best to establish at the onset of the game that you are a tight player. A tight player is someone who seems to bet only if he or she has a definite winning hand.

4. The best time to test the waters in terms of how the other players react is when you are one of the blinds. This way, you get to see what type of players you are up against but at the same time, you are also playing to get back the bet you have given to the pot.

5. If by your analysis, the players you are dealing with are aggressive, loose and arrogant, then you have to think doubly hard every time you make a bluff. These types of players are the ones who usually call a bet and if you have an awful hand, you might end up biting more than you can chew. The best times to bluff is when your table is filled with conservative and tight players.

Some say that the chip stack is a determinant if a player will call you on a bluff or not. They say that is a player is short stacked, he may not want to risk his game and he will not meet you if you raise. However, there are players who are so short stacked that they are forced to go all in when challenged. So a better determinant will be gauging a player’s risk averseness. If a short stacked player is risk averse, he or she will end up folding in the beginning of a show down. If the short tacked player is a known risk taker, he or she might end up taking you on the bet.
