Multi-Table Tournament Strategy 101

Seeing that this is a beginner’s multi-table tournament strategy, this article will go back to the basics. It will examine each of the factors that come into play when you are playing a multi-table poker tournament and it will tell you some tricks and tips in playing poker. This strategy guide does not at all promise sure fire win in each hand but it will help you plug the leaks in your multi-table poker gaming skills.

First, a definition of terminology is apt. What is a multi-table poker tournament? Think of the rules of a regular poker game. They apply here however this time, instead of having one table, there are various tables in a room and depending on the time frame of the tournament. At a certain point of the game, re-buys are allowed but at a particular hour into the tournament, this opportunity to increase your pot is removed. One by one, each table is eliminated of players, finally arriving to a single table where the remaining players battle for the pot money.

In playing a multi-table poker tourney, the biggest mistake that beginners make is that they seem to “eager” to play and dazzle their opponents, betting even if their hand is awful and meeting a raised bet in hopes of not losing the money placed on their initial bets. This is a very weak strategy and this ends up “dazzling” no one. Poker is a game of minds and luck. Luck is not something that you can control so you put all of your efforts in the mental part of the game.

On each table that you start in, you need to be as observant as possible. Remember how each player reacts and try to calibrate their playing styles. See if they have a certain “tell” each time they bluff or if you are playing online, be very observant of their virtual responses each time a bet is placed. In doing poker reconnaissance, play as conservatively as you can.  This does not mean that you end up folding all the time except in cases where you are the blind but this means that you act like a tight player, betting on good hands and folding on awful ones.

Once you have determined the type of players that you are up against with on one table, this is the time that you put your strategies in place. If your table is chock-full of conservative players, bluffing will be your best friend, especially if you are one of the two blinds. If you end up in the hole position, then you may want to try blind stealing. Do not bee too concerned on your chip position as this will end up distracting you more often than help you become more motivated to win. Getting too nervous will make you choose the worst possible decisions in a poker multi-tournament.

If you do reach the final table, which beginners rarely get into, then try to gain as much as you can with your first final table experience. Observe how others play. At the same time, you need to be more of a risk taker at the final table or you will end up losing great chances to walk away with a great win.
