POKER STRATEGY: A WAY TO WIN THE GAME

Like any realistic skill game in today's society, poker is indeed a game with a multifaceted conglomeration of skill, luck, strategy, scheme, and personality. The theories involved in the playing of the game may not be applicable to everybody, however. There are instances where strategies and techniques applied by one player may not always work for another. That being said, though, most poker experts still contend that solid, fundamental poker strategies and techniques of play are still critical elements of winning the game.

Most poker players will tell you that they face constant hard decisions at every game they play. With so many options and styles of play to consider, it can often be overwhelming to make the right decision. Because of this, most players believe that they need to equip themselves with practical poker strategy and tips so as to establish the appropriate expectation for every probable move of other players at the table. As a competitive player, not only should you know the how to make the correct move, you should also know how to make the correct counter to your opponent's correct move. Poker is – and never will be – a one person game.

Stick to the top starting hands. By playing only premium hands, you're giving yourself better chances of ultimately winning the pot. You're also keeping yourself from loosing chips on bad starting cards. Stick the best, and play your hands aggressively. In the end, you'll come out on top/

Generally, sound psychological poker strategy is one of the hardest poker strategies to master. You should know how to read your opponent's hand, as well as be adept in reading his actions and reactions at the table. If you can interpret the physical and verbal language of your opponent, you already have him beat. Both of these things can divulge a lot of information about the strengths and weaknesses of a player's hand.

Good poker strategy also requires a player to vary his poker approach. This means that there should be times that you know how to tactically bluff a game. This, in turn, will make other players have a hard time reading your cards and predict your next move.

Bluffing, however, should never be a consistent part of your poker strategy. Bluffing should only be used when the need arises. Constant and consistent bluffing will eventually lead to a bad table image and, ultimately, large losses.

To possess the fundamental strategy and technique necessary to win, you must also have a sound knowledge of the mathematical side of the game. This is where many players fail. Without a solid mathematical base to your game, you will never consistently win. Know your outs and percentages, and know how to use them to make the right decisions. With sound mathematical knowledge, good poker players take luck out of the game.

Quite possibly the most important poker strategy of all, however, is this: never form a pattern of play. Being able to disguise your play may be the most valuable poker strategy you could have. Any good poker strategy can be defeated if it's process of winning is made obvious. Disguise your play by switching things up every so often. Instead of playing tight, play aggressive. Instead of being reserved, take chances. Bluff when you sense weakness. Do just about anything you normally wouldn't do. This keep your opponent guessing, and, ultimately, keeps you one step ahead of the game.
